Report users find high prices and shoddy repairs among the largest owners of car repair shops gripes

Tags: Every year, the Annual Report Auto Consumer Survey asks car owners because they were satisfied with the repairs done by auto dealers and independent shops in the past 12 months. This year, the research is based on the improvement of services to more than 67,000 visits to the mechanics of the report free services and visits 101,000 new car sales representatives from CR subscribers.
Tags: As in years past, most car owners prefer to get their cars to independent shops from the dealers for repairs. But for the first time, Consumer Report 5400 also re-contacted and asked respondents to repair their specific gripes. The group, about three-quarters either completely or very satisfied with their repair shops. But that is not 27 percent, 38 percent cite high prices as an excuse. This is a common complaint for most retailers (42 percent) of the independent stores (32 percent).
Tags: The second most common complaint among re-contact respondents are even more alarming: more than a quarter of the dissatisfied group, said the problem was not the car they are installed properly, this narrowing has been reported at the same rate in sales and shops free.
Other Gripes
: Twenty-one percent of re-contacting customers said it took longer than expected to complete the work, and 18 percent said they had to bring the car back for repairs did not hold. Once again, independent dealers and split the blame for this complaint is similar. There is little difference between the two types of repair shops among the owners who feel the staff has treated them badly, with 8 percent, citing sales representatives and four per cent, free quotes.

Re-contacting customers, nearly a quarter of that in the past five years, they will have the vehicle repaired at the shop they did not use because of problems with their service experience. Almost half of the group cited a negative experience is a sales representative, 1/3 say it is a duty-free shops, and 1/5, quoting the franchise chains like Midas or Sears.

The main reasons for the change

Tags: Describe the problem in general. Leaving the store as much information as possible. Write down the symptoms and when it happens. If possible, talk directly to the mechanics who will work in your car.
Tags: Do not give a diagnosis. Do not say what you think of that causes problems. You can be on the hook for any repair shop to make your proposal, even if they do not solve the problem.
Tags: Ask the pilot test. If the problem occurs only when the car moves, ask mechanic to accompany you on test drive.Ask for rating. And they call you for approval if the repair will be more expensive than estimated.
Tags: Ask for proof. If you are not satisfied with the diagnosis, ask the store to show you, the parts of the problem. Worn brake pads or rusted exhaust pipe is easy to see. Do not let the mechanic refuse your request, said that her insurance company does not allow customers in the work area.
